Human Existence Formula

Hermann Struck Museum Haifa 2014

Curator: Svetlana Reingold

This exhibition represents a meeting between Pinchas Cohen Gan and Doron Fishbein, two Israeli artists from different generations. They come from two different paths to an identical target. Both are concerned with the relationship between Science and Art: what does rationality contributes to Art? When does it become Art or at the very least serves Art? In these works one can find graphical experiments in the creation of a new descriptive language. The expressions communicate a new syntax or  unprocessed utterances   that search for completion. Their advantage is not in a well-defined expression but rather in their existence as a silent question "Where to?". In this space the works use every possible imagery without a logical or formalistic limit and in this sense they are more like dreams that link together subconsciously and are not bounded by any familiar, concrete sequence, but rather an accidental symbolism chosen by the subconscious. Evey scientific, lingual, or numeral  sign is chosen as an attempt to construct a new meaning, and the experiment enriches and invites the observer to investigate.

Doron Fishbein attempts to bridge between technology and muse, between the man and the machine. In his eyes every object is linked to a familiar experience. For example: a cellular antenna or an emergency air raid siren are tools that create different signals, to which our lives are, perhaps, a reaction. In contrast, Cohen Gan – searches for a self-sufficient art that is independent of source and seemingly is not influenced by anything. He expresses a personal wish to be without guidance or influence and the works are the results of his efforts in this direction.
